Testing Procedures

  • Topography - a mapping of the cornea, shows curvatures of the cornea and also assists in detecting eye diseases.
  • Keratometry - measures the shape and curvature of the cornea and helps to determine the presence and /or amount of astigmatism.
  • Fundus Exam - Our physician examines your lens and retina to ensure it is healthy.
  • Slit lamp exam - this is the microscope, which helps determine the health of the cornea. The tonometer on the microscope is how we measure the amount of pressure in your eyes to rule out glaucoma.
  • Pachymeter - this measure the thickness of your cornea
  • Wavescan- WaveScan technology provides a measurement and a visual representation of your vision based on the behavior of light waves. It compares light passing through your eye to the same light pattern from an eye that needs no vision correction. The WavePrint Map is the output of the WaveScan, it captures the unique imperfections of a person's visual path.

Pupil size in the dark is very important when looking at whether or not you are a candidate for Horizon LASIK. Once we have obtained accurate measurements and ensured overall healthiness of the eye, the next step is to simply schedule a date for your Horizon Lasik procedure. We will then see you in our accredited surgery center.

How LASIK Works

LASIK | PRK | Epi-LASIK | Galloway | Manahawkin | MargatLaser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) is a safe, reliable and painless way to improve vision by changing the way light is bent, or refracted, as it passes through the cornea, so that it properly focuses on the retina and allows objects to be seen clearly.

During the LASIK procedure, the surgeon creates a thin flap in the surface of the cornea with a device called a microkeratome. Keep in mind that we are using numbing drops so you will not feel any pain during the procedure, nor will you have that sensation of needing to blink. The corneal flap is then lifted and an excimer laser beam reshapes the cornea's curvature to improve vision. Finally, the flap is placed back to its original position. The entire procedure takes about 15 to 30 minutes.

The ideal LASIK candidate includes someone who is over 18 years old, has stable vision and has a healthy cornea that is thick enough for a flap. After undergoing the procedure, patients often experience rapid vision improvement and can sometimes return to work the very next day.

Alternatives to LASIK

LASIK | PRK | Epi-LASIK | Galloway | Manahawkin | MargatFor the vast majority of Horizon's patients wishing to minimize or eliminate their dependence on glasses or contact lenses, LASIK will be the procedure of choice. If you are not a candidate for LASIK, your doctor may recommend one of these alternate methods of vision correction.

Epi-LASIK (Epithelial Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomeleusis), PRK and LASEK are all Advanced Surface Ablation procedures that involve 1. the removal of the epithelium layer of the cornea (PRK) or 2. the creation of an epithelial flap (Epi-LASIK and LASEK). The Excimer laser is then used to correct the prescription by reshaping the corneal tissue. The only difference in these three procedures is the way the superficial eye skin is removed.

The main premise between Epi-LASIK, PRK and LASEK is that no corneal flap is made. Healing takes longer than with LASIK, but the visual results are the same. With these surface treatments, there is no risk of a flap complication (with LASIK the risk is less than 1%). The disadvantage is that there is a longer healing process and visual results are not as quick.

What to Expect

LASIK | PRK | Epi-LASIK | Galloway | Manahawkin | Margat We tell our patients to expect to be at the laser center for 1-2 hours. During this time, you will be handing in your consent forms, taking medication to relax you, and having a small talk about what to expect during and after the procedure. You will be given a special post-op packet with anti-inflammatory eye drops, lubricating drops and protective goggles. You will also receive a pair of darker sunglasses that protect you from sun rays on all sides of the eye (your eye may be light sensitive for a few days).

The actual procedure takes approximately 15 minutes for both eyes. Drs. Howard Gross and Matthew Perez are wonderful at helping you relax during the entire process. Rest assured you are in the safe hands of an excellent, well-experienced surgeon.

Following the surgery, you lay back and relax. Shortly after, our doctors will follow-up and make sure everything is proceeding smoothly. With their final "OK", you are able to go home.

A family member or friend should be driving you home where you should get some rest. We suggest you go home and sleep for a few hours. The next day, you should be able to return to work, however, you need a follow-up visit with one of our doctors that day.

To see if you are a candidate for the Horizon Lasik Procedure, call us at 609-822-4242 to make an appointment for your FREE screening.
